New England Chapter No. 8 NAWCC

SPRING MEETING, SUNDAY, MARCH 21, 2004

Worcester Holiday Inn
Meeting Highlights by Mal Greene

A fine spring day favored the members and guests to the meeting. Dave Deutermann, Chapter 8 president along with fellow officers greeted more than 220 who attended. The mart set about 45 tables and supplied a great variety of horological items including many fine watches and clocks along with the usual array of tools, books, and fixer uppers (my favorite). Frank Menez was assisted in running the “silent auction” table. This table also displayed a magnificent lyre frame skeleton clock made by Michael Yawitch of Sharon, Mass. It required about 800 hours and featured Harrison maintaining power, as well as a Sun wheel and planetary movement.

Wayne Paskerian and Mrs. kept the registrations moving along and as always included a number of walk-in registrations and membership renewals as well as some new members. DON'T forget your dues, please.

Burt Kassap along with Larry Chelmow and others were kept busy maintaining the schedule and setting up the workshops. This included a fair amount directing attendees who were unfamiliar with the location to the right rooms. I hope you took time to thank them??

Paul Foley, a long time member of the NAWCC and author of “ Willard’s Patent Timepieces”, pleased a large audience at his workshop titled: Willard’s Patent Timepieces- A history of the weight driven banjo clock. A presentation he is eminently qualified for.

Our own Joe Brown, FNAWCC, held the attention of about 50 at his hands on workshop: Restoring Antique Brass Dials. He set up buffers, baths etc. as he demonstrated the process from start to finish sic. No pun intended! Wayne Kasperian also displayed barometer dials he had refinished using the same method. Tho’ no easy task, should help us all over come another challenge in our quest to save and restore the fine old clocks and timepieces we enjoy as well as for others.

Chris Bailey who comes to us from the American Clock and Watch Museum followed a fine meal. Where he was managing director and now the curator and librarian as well as a horological consultant. His presentation included visuals "FAKES and MISTAKES" Many are deliberate by owners to defraud the buyers. Some were "marriages" between movements, cases, and faces, which totally misrepresented the clock that was offered. He also gave tips on what to look for.

A moment of silence was held for the memory of Mrs. Imogene Robinson, who was cofounder of the Willard House and Clock Museum. Also for Armando Cimino who talented machining skills and kind smile. They will be missed by all who knew them.

I heard many favorable comments about the meeting agenda and the meal. How sweet it is to please so many. Do yourself a favor and catch up with us if you’ve not been able to in the past. Hope to see you soon. Bring a friend that may want to join in the experience. Let’s keep the roster filled.
